2ND BATCH OF GHANAIAN SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETERS COMPLETED COURSE

The 2nd batch of students doing Diploma in Ghanaian Sign Language Interpreting at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) have successfully completed their course. The students, who were selected from various regions represented a very highly diversity group including qualified Nurses, Teachers and persons who already served as sign language interpreters in various institutions.

At a closing session with the students, the Executive Director of GNAD thanked the University authorities and lecturers for the hard work despite challenges. He challenged the students to make good use of the skills gained and always make themselves available to provide professional interpreting services to the Deaf community, noting that while academic skills are crucial, it’s on the job that their skills would be assessed.

The course secretary for the diploma program, Mr. Gideon Obosu, also urged the students to ensure that they continue to improve their skills and maintain highest professional standard in accordance with their training.

Background to the Program

The Diploma in Ghanaian Sign Language Interpreting Programme is an initiation of the Ghana National Association of the Deaf under the Disability Joint Project. The program is the first in West Africa. The project identifies individuals who are already serving as interpreters in various capacities for further training and certification in partnership with an accrediated University. The project is based on the assumption that despite their individual experiences from various fields, SLIs need further training and capacity building in order to be able to provide their services more professional. Also the provision of certificates to SLI gives the interpreters greater respect about their profession making it easier to be recognized.

Sponsored fully by Danida under the strengthening the Disability Movement project, the project is hosted by the University of Cape Coast and managed by the Faculty of Educational Foundations.  The 2nd batch of students forms part of the sign language interpreters that were selected for further training and certification in the UCC under the GNAD Project sponsored by Danida under the Joint disability project. The first group completed in 2018 and graduated in the same year.

So far, some of the students who graduated last year have already secured jobs while others retained their previous jobs while availing themselves for services when needed.
