DANIDA JOINT PROJECT MAKES HISTORY

Section of the Interpreters at the 51st Congregation, UCC.

The Danida Joint Project has made a wonderful history with the graduation of the first batch of Ghanaian Sign Language Interpreters at the 51st Congregation of the University of Cape Coast with Diploma in Ghanaian Sign Language Interpreting.

The Diploma in Ghanaian Sign Language Interpreting (SANDWICH) is an initiation of the Ghana National Association of the Deaf under the Danida joint project and implemented at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) with financial support from DANIDA disability joint project. The Danida Disability Joint Project is a large project with 5 Disabled People’s Organizations (DPOs) in Ghana and 4 in Denmark. GNAD’s core advocacy under the project is for access to sign language services both through training and advocacy for engagement of sign language interpreters in public places. The program holds over 40% share of GNAD’s component in the Danida joint project.

Under the project, GNAD with financial support from Danida, provides full sponsorship to the lecturers and students. The students’ sponsorship covers lodging, feeding and Academic Facility User Fees (AFUF). Also provided includes equipments for the smooth running of the programme.

The first of its kind in Ghana and indeed the West African Sub-region, the project aims at training and certifying existing Ghanaian Sign Language Interpreters with further knowledge and capacity to be able to function as professional interpreters for the deaf community in formal and semi-formal contexts.

We are indeed grateful to DANIDA for its financial support, our Northern Partner, Danish Deaf Association (DDA) for its continuous cooperation and support and all implementation partners under the joint project.

Without you all, indeed this programme would not see the lights of the day.
