GNAD Members in Northern Ghana Receives Training on CRPD & PWDs Act

The Leadership of Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) in the Northern Ghana have received capacity building training on the Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) Act 715 and the UNCRPD as part of the DRF sponsored project for its members in the three Northern Regions: Wa Municipal and, Tamale and Bolgatanga Metropolises. 

The capacity building programme aims at empowering Deaf People in the three Northern Regions so that they can effectively advocate for themselves and demand effective recognition of their fundamental human rights. The project placed particular emphasis on Article 13 (Access to justice) and Article 21 (Access to information) and relevant provisions within PWDs Act 715 and the UNCRPD.

Key stakeholders within the Justice System; Ghana Police, Judiciary Services, National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), Department of Social Welfare (DSW) and the Media were also sensitised on the fundamental rights of Deaf People in the three Regions to be able to adequately handles cases involving Deaf People.

In the Upper West Region for example, GNAD members were trained by Deputy Chief Investigator of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Lawyer Sebastine Ziem. In the Northern Region, Lawyer Terrance took GNAD members through the PWDs Act, Ghana Legal System, the CRPD and Legal Aid Scheme. Capacity building training was held for GNAD Regional Leaders and Board Members which was facilitated by an expert in Disability Rights Law Lawyer Esther Gyamfi Akua on Monday 5th June, 2017 at Washington View hotel, Ejisu in the Ashanti Region.
