Health Workers in SAAF Districts Received Training

Over 40 health workers in 4 Project Districts have received training as part of SAAF Project aimed at building their capacity to provide deaf friendly services to Deaf people in 4 Project Districts. The Project Districts include Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, Savelugu Municipal, Accra Metropolitan and Ashaiman Municipal.

The workers who collectively come from over 10 various health facilities comprise of pharmacists, midwives, General Nurses and Specially trained in adolescent reproductive health. The trainings form part of comprehensive package of interventions by GNAD in collaboration with the Ghana Health Services of the beneficiary Districts to address barriers to access comprehensive healthcare for GNAD members. In all, two trainings have so far been organized in Northern Region and Greater Accra Region.

Addressing participants at the start of training in the Greater Accra Region, the Executive Director of GNAD, Mr. Juventus Duorinaah, noted that though SRH is a national development issue with comprehensive support from the state, little have been done to address the SRH concerns of individuals who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. He observed that the association as part of its advocacy would intensify its collaboration with the Ghana Health Services to see how best the SRH concerns of the Deaf Community can be addressed. He noted that, in as much as health workers have individually or collectively come into contact with Deaf people at various stages of their work,  it was important that they health workers receive training that will equip them with desired knowledge to be able to provide Deaf friendly services. He charged participants not only to share the experiences with their colleagues, but to be advocates for the SRH needs of the Deaf community.

We hope at the end of this this important project, some leaders of GHS who get part of the training will able to educate they nurses.

We also will be happy if the GHS could become FRIENDLY OF DEAF. To help our deaf brothers and sisters who seek health care at various health centers in the country.
