Successful Funding of Sexual & Reproductive Health Project in Northern, B.A & Greater Accra Region

The Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) is thrilled to announce that it has successfully received funding from Safe Abortion Action Fund (SAAF) to work towards improving access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Information and Services for Deaf people in three out of Ghana’s 10 regions. The beneficiary regions are the Northern, Brong Ahafo and Greater Accra.

The funding covers initiatives around general SRH for the Ghanaian Deaf community in accordance with our set organization plan. GNAD is particularly thrilled in that under the organization’s 5year strategy (2016 -2020), objective 11, the organization commits itself to ensure that by December, 2020, ‘the deaf community at all levels are informed about the danger of HIV/AIDS, STI and that SRH is included in all its activities’.

GNAD has seen considerable expansion over the past 10 years from initial 30 districts to over 135 district branches scattered across Ghana. In addition, there has been considerable expansion in membership base, school enrolment, access to higher education and increased youthful population within reproductive age. These developments present unique challenges to the organization around SRH.

Some of the initiatives under SAAF project include conducting participatory research into current knowledge and practices of SRH including safe clinical abortion services among Deaf people in 6 project districts, comprehensive community sensitization and education of deaf people, national and nationwide dialogue on deaf friendly SRH information and services, utilization of IT based system to improve access, capacity building and awareness creating regarding SRH for deaf adults, students, out of school adolescents and capacity building for national leaders for sustainable advocacy around SRH.

The SAAF Project is being implemented in six districts; Tano South and Sunyani Municipal in the Brong Ahafo Region, Accra Metropolitan and Ashaiman Municipal in the Greater Accra Region and Tamale Metropolitan and Savelugu Municipal in the Northern Region. In addition to adults, youth and out of school deaf adolescents, in-school adolescents in three (3) schools for the deaf; Savelugu School for the Deaf, Tetteh Ocloo School for the Deaf and Bechem Technical Institution will benefit from the project directly.
