Job Description: Teachers of Deaf for a new Junior and Senior High School and Vocational Training Program

Hope for the Deaf has new job opportunities for 2-3 Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teachers for a new Junior High School, Senior High School, and Vocational Training Center.

This is an exciting opportunity to teach in a new model residential school and teacher training center for students in 7th – 12th grade, located in Clay-Ashland, Montserrado County, Liberia. We are currently looking for teachers who can provide preparatory education to 5th and 6th grade students at the Hope for the Deaf School in Monrovia, Liberia for the 2019-20 School Year, and then transfer to teach 7th grade students the following year at the new campus currently being built in Clay-Ashland.

QUALIFICATIONS. Education, Training, and Experience in teaching students with a primary disability of deafness or hearing impairment. Preference will be given to individuals with experience teaching junior school and senior high school students who are deaf. Fluency in sign language communication is necessary for this job, but training opportunities exist, for those who qualify otherwise.

Specifically, we expect our teachers to have knowledge, skills and abilities to apply principles and techniques of individualized instruction; principles and techniques of behavioral management; current trends in educational methods for teaching language and reading; ability to establish and maintain a program of instruction and learning for individuals with disabilities; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; assess to determine pupil abilities and progress; knowledge of nonverbal communication techniques and systems, e.g. sign language and computers; ability to teach and/or instruct students using sign language; and ability to work with and/or learn about AV equipment and computers.

TRAINING. This summer, 2019, we will host an intensive training program in methodologies for teaching reading comprehension, writing skills, and mathematics to deaf adolescence and (our incoming junior high school students), for teachers hired for the above described position(s). Other current qualified junior high school teachers of the deaf, or qualified teachers interested in working with deaf students, may also apply for this summer training.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Any one position may not include all the duties or tasks listed below)

Instruction.  Under direction of the administrator, teachers plan and provide instruction to students who are deaf and perform related duties as required.  Teachers will also assist with dormitory supervision. Specifically, they will:

  • Establish instructional/learning environment for the student, adapt/modify curriculum for the student,
  • Develop and sequence a variety of instructional activities to meet the student’s individual goals/objectives (i.e., lesson plans) which are based on the student’s Individual Education Plan,
  • Provide direct student instruction, monitor/chart behavioral and instructional (academic) progress for the students,
  • Establish a varied environment which accommodates the differing ways deaf students learn
  • Maintain records and reports regarding pupil progress.
  • Work collaboratively with parents/families and transdisciplinary staff, and
  • Conduct home visits with families.

Individualized Education Program Process.  Conduct assessment/evaluation of student abilities and needs; attend and serve as a member of the IEP team; assist in the development of IEP instructional goals/objectives; assist in identifying other related services for the student; and, reassess/evaluate student progress.

Interpersonal Relations/Communications.  Maintain cooperative working relationships with parents, staff, other school personnel and other community service agencies; maintain effective and timely written and oral communication with parents, staff, other school personnel; and attend various school related meetings.

The Hope for The Deaf National Training Institute

Overall Project Goals and Objectives

The primary goal of this initiative is to create a state of the art, high visibility educational and teacher -training center for the deaf in Liberia.  The Hope for The Deaf National Training Institute will build upon the 15-year experience of the Hope for The Deaf School now operating through sixth grade in Monrovia and Kakata, Liberia.  More specifically, it will provide:

  1. Opportunities for deaf children to continue and complete their education, 7th through 12th grade, in a high quality secondary residential program based on best practices in deaf education;
  2. A vocational education and job placement program for young adults, including school graduates and young adults;
  3. A teacher training program utilizing research-based teaching methodologies from successful deaf education programs in the United States, with advisory support from the U.S. National Association for Deaf Education and Gallaudet University;
  4. And a sign language and interpreter training program to increase the ability of deaf people to communicate with others in their families and communities and to become more involved and active participants in society.

Note: Hope for The Deaf National Training Institute is being built on a 15-acre lot located in Clay-Ashland, Liberia. Clay Ashland is a township located 10 miles from Monrovia, the capital of Liberia.  The Hope for the Deaf National Training Institute will serve up to 120 students, with up to 100 students living at the school. This assumes there would be local students as well.

    I’m first degree holder in special education hearing impairement and Art education from University of education winneba(Ghana).l was Pre technical skills teacher under Ghana Education service who served for 13yrs before went for further studies without pay.Haven graduated July 2017,l proceeded to have 1yr National service At Volta school for the Deaf Hohoe,Due to my performance teaching pre technical skills, the school management recommended me to Ghana Education service to re enstate me but not yet posted.due to my hard work I was chosen by Peace corps Ghana as counterparts to a volunteer,l also have good skills in creative arts.l wish apply for this opportunity as a teacher in your office can give me this opportunity to teach,l will be great full.
