GNAD BUILT THE CAPACITY OF ITS STAFF ON ADVOCACY, NETWORKING AND REPORTING

Advocacy work in GNAD over the past has not been very well-coordinated, thus in the area of advocacy not much progress has been made.  As part of the DDL project, GNAD is focusing on advocacy areas addressing the three (3) core human rights issues of the Deaf which are: Deaf people’s right to receive a driving license; CRPD compliant approach to inclusive education; Recognition of the Ghanaian Sign Language (GSL).

The staff were taken through the concept of Advocacy, approaches to advocacy with a focus on alliance building and networking, the power of numbers and the power of noise, and using the media in Advocacy (mass media and social media). Participants then went through a series of group work and presentations on steps in planning advocacy and later developed an advocacy plan to guide the work of GNAD. The capacity building workshop was a successful one as the end of the training participants were more knowledgeable about the approaches, they can use in doing their advocacy work.
