Research Assistant Vacancy. Deaf Legal Theory Project in Ghana

Ghana National Association of the Deaf invites applications for a full-time Research Assistant role. This position supports a deaf-led research project in partnership with UWE Bristol, UK. The project pilots and expands the Deaf Legal Theory model in Ghana.

Role overview

  • Position: Research Assistant
  • Location: GNAD, with travel across Ghana
  • Contract: Fixed term, 12 months
  • Start date: 1 June 2026
  • Accountability: Principal Investigator at UWE Bristol and Executive Director of GNAD

Project focus

  • Explore how deaf people in Ghana experience law, rights, and legal systems
  • Use lived experiences to inform advocacy and policy work
  • Apply participatory, deaf-led research methods

Key responsibilities
Community engagement

  • Recruit deaf participants from diverse backgrounds
  • Support clear communication before, during, and after activities
  • Ensure participants understand research purpose and rights

Stage 1 interviews

  • Conduct one-to-one interviews in Ghanaian Sign Language
  • Use structured interview guides
  • Support video recording and consent documentation
  • Maintain accurate records

Stage 2 workshops

  • Co-facilitate participatory group workshops
  • Support logistics, accessibility, and materials
  • Assist with documentation of workshop outputs

Data and research support

  • Organise data securely and ethically
  • Contribute Ghanaian deaf perspectives to analysis
  • Support identification of emerging themes

Collaboration

  • Act as a link between GNAD, participants, and the Principal Investigator
  • Join regular project meetings in International Sign
  • Support local dissemination and feedback sessions

Essential requirements

  • Deaf person with strong links to Ghanaian deaf communities
  • Master’s level qualification
  • Fluent in Ghanaian Sign Language
  • Confident communication in International Sign
  • Strong written English skills
  • Experience with deaf organisations, NGOs, or advocacy work
  • Commitment to participatory and deaf-led research

Desirable experience

  • Training in research, advocacy, or community consultation
  • Experience on funded national or international projects
  • Qualitative data collection and interpretation
  • Workshop facilitation and group engagement
