Introduction
The West African Community for the Deaf (WCARS), based at the Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD), recently hosted a pivotal gathering of its member associations in Accra, Ghana. Held at the Coconut Grove Hotels from August 3rd to 7th, 2024, the event brought together representatives from the Association des Sourds du Niger (ASN), Association des Sourds du Togo (AST), Association Malienne pour les Sourds (AMASOURDS), and Association Nationale des Sourds de Côte d’Ivoire (ANASOCI).
Purpose of Evaluation
The primary aim of the gathering was to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the WCARS project and provide capacity-building opportunities for staff members of the participating associations. The evaluation process was led by seasoned evaluators, Mr. Shani Mahama and Mr. Issah Aminu Danaa.
Workshop Activities
Over the course of the three-day event, the presidents of the five associations and their staff members, including Country Project Officers, Programs Managers, and Project Coordinators, shared their experiences and insights on the WCARS project’s fieldwork activities. A series of presentations highlighted the project’s successes, challenges, and areas for improvement.
Conclusion
The evaluation workshop provided a valuable platform for WCARS and its member associations to assess the project’s progress and identify areas for enhancement. The insights gained from this evaluation will inform future planning and implementation of the WCARS project. By strengthening the capacity of its member associations and fostering collaboration among deaf communities in West Africa, WCARS continues to play a crucial role in promoting the rights and well-being of deaf individuals in the region.
