The Ghana National Association of the (GNAD) has unveiled a comprehensive two (2) days of training the Deaf community from three (3) selected regions, the Western, Upper West, and Bono regions in Accra on Sexual reproductive Health and safe menstrual hygiene practices.

This is aimed at Deaf adults or out of school Deaf adolescent to make an informed decision about their sexuality and aid their peers in overcoming sexual reproductive health-related issues at their regional level. The main purpose was to guarantee that Deaf adolescent youth of reproductive age and adults had access to excellent information and services on their sexual reproductive health rights.

Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) is a developing issue and a serious health concern in Ghana, as evident by figures showing that sexually transmitted infections among young people of reproductive age, pregnancy-related complications, and unsafe induced abortion accounted for more than 11 percent of maternal mortality.

Even though the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and civil society organizations (CSOs) have taken substantial steps to address the worrying trends in recent years, the Deaf community has been mostly left behind, and this has made it necessary for this training to be done to bring the Deaf community on board in acquiring knowledge in their SRH rights, with financial supports from Amplified Change since 2019, to provide this training to over 470,737 people with varying degrees of hearing loss.

Mrs. Selorm Sefenu, a nurse and a public health promotion officer was the facilitator for the two days training workshop, she led the participants through a series of topics including peer educators’ role in SRH, sexually transmitted infections, menstrual hygiene, teenage pregnancy, family planning, and contraception, adolescent development, abortion, and sexual and gender-based violence.

After the two days of training and workshop, some items were presented to the participants to enable them to go and be peer educators in their various communities.
